Very good point. I did not read the entire article so my apoligies on that. IMO, especially with all the university shootings, that a student should be able to carry a weapon on campus for safety. However, he/she must have a license of course.

But then again, whose to say that person wouldnt harm others even if they were licensed??

True, and that's sort of the sad thing.. you can't trust anyone, no matter who they are or what qualifications they have.

Agreed completely, which is why I don't think you should make it easier for tragedies to happen. Theres a reason beyond the obvious why they don't allow weapons into sporting events. Permit or not you put a Yankees/Red Sox fan together at a game with a gun what do you think is going down?

    Re: student expelled from UVAWise

To read that some of you are taking up for this guy just makes me sick. Writing the story is one thing but to have 3 loaded guns in your vehicle on a college campus where they are prohibited, now that's a different story.

Most of the horrible tragedies that have occurred at other universities have started with a student writing stuff just like this and everyone just passed it off as "fiction". Then something horrible happens and to hear about the signs that where there but ignored, and everyone is outraged that no "red-flag" was threw up.

Obviously the professor was alarmed for a reason and it sounds to me after what they found it was a very good thing he was alarmed. No one knows what this guy was thinking, but with the way society is today you can never be to safe.

It would scare the crap out of me knowing that a guy at my college had three loaded guns in his vehicle, wouldn't it you? I don't care if you have a permit or not, he knew they were forbidden on the campus and should have known better. Why not be a man and admit your mistake and face the reality of the punishment.

This isn't about freedom of speech and all that. The fact is he had three loaded guns at a place where they are prohibited. Also being a vet I agree that he should know better.

I'm glad the professor was alarmed and the college did what they should have done. They should be praised and not downed for their actions. Just imagine if your kids where going there, what would you want the school to do?

I dont think most if any have defended his actions involving the guns. And there are few (but tragic) incidents where this has come from a writing to action scenario. You have to take into account the thousands, if not millions of people who have went to college and wrote something that never left the pages of paper. If something is disturbing and warrents an investigation then so be it, if there specifics, then carry on with a probe. But to throw red flags on every idea that is "odd" or "off the wall" will only cause people to hold back in a setting where you are supposed to feel free enough to express, create and learn. I dont think anyone would try and take light away from any of the campus problems that have happened, nor would they say anything about the warning signs, but it is just a matter of when signs are going to be shown, self restriction along with outside restriction begins to take place. Its unfortunate that people have to take such actions as they have, it really has as we can see changed society and the way we think.

    Re: student expelled from UVAWise

IMO, I see nothing wrong with what he did...having a gun on campus isn't against a state law, just the college's laws. If the good ol US of A can eliminate the wussitis that currently has taken hold of the media and younger generation, maybe we still stand a chance of regaining the semblance of a country with a lil common sense. The same folks who think a student having a gun or 3 in his car, and writes good fiction is reason for expulsion is the same group that believes terrorists are responsible for all the world's problems...why? cuz that's what the media has spoonfed them. The same group has always been taught that it's ok to be gay, and that it is ok to accept the limitations of themselves and others instead of trying to overcome them, and that it is ok to watch as our government wipes it's arse with our constitution. The kid wrote a good story involving no violence, and had weapons LOCKED in his car that he was permitted to carry....get over it people. Not all young people have swallowed 2 decades of Government BS propaganda hook line and sinker...good for him.

    What YB said.

The guns--inexcusable. To try to get him committed or at least evaluated based on something he wrote creatively for a class is a VERY slippery slope. If the professor would have simply said to the student, "this seems very realistic, is this truly fiction or do you have intentions of doing something like this"...then the student could have answered yes or no, then the professor & college could have acted accordingly w/o jeopardizing anyone's safety. Sometimes people overreact instead of asking a question that needs to be asked before reacting--this is such a case I think.

I 100% agree w/YB on the stance of taking away the freedom to create and express freely in a college setting. I've not read the story this guy wrote for his class, but according to the article--the substance wasn't what should have been the focus--it should have been the first person narrative perspective that he used and how he delved into the psyche of someone who was contemplating doing something like Cho did at VT. It was controversial...but it was creative and expressive. I admire that.

The college upheld the expulsion...looks like UVA-WISE is run by a bunch of split tails whether they were born that way or not. Liberal Arts College my a$$...stuff like this makes me ashamed that my BA came from that hole in the ground.

He was involuntarily committed not just because of the writing, but after a psych evaluation. We dont know what came out in that evaluation, but obviously it was enough to put him in. You have to be determined to be an immediate danger to yourself and/or others to be committed involuntarily.
    You'll shoot your eye out.
